Inspired by Oscar Nakasato's debut novel, the book was the winner of the 1st Benvirá Literature Prize and winner of the 54th edition of the Jabuti Prize, in the romance category, in 2012.
Hideo Inabata is a Japanese man, proud of his nationality, who arrived in Brazil in the second decade of the 20th century with the aim of becoming rich and fulfilling the sacred mission of bringing resources to Japan, as instructed by the emperor to his subjects. The hard work in the field, the difficult adaptation to Brazil, the death of his first wife and the conflicts with his children Haruo and Sumie are a test of the inflexibility of the nihonjin (Japanese). The narrator, grandson of the protagonist and son of Sumie, lends a voice and contemporary vision to his grandfather's transformation and his dream of returning home rich.
